The Best Tactics in Freerolls is NOT to Play

As everyone can guess, freeroll tournaments are quite popular in poker websites. It is pretty easy to understand their popularity & they are FREE. Participants can try their luck and skills without any fee and have a chance to win some money.

However, I won't give you the best strategies on how to play and win in freerolls. Instead, I will try to convince you NOT to participate in freeroll tournaments which will save your precious time and energy!

1st REASON: FREEROLLS HAVE A VERY POOR PAYOUT

At first sight, some websites offer freerolls with high budgets. But in reality, you need to look at the payouts relative to the number of players. In the end, you have to compete with 2000 or more players for a chance to win a few dollars. And what do you expect? The poker website is giving the money for free and their goal is for people to get hooked up and later play in cash games or tournaments.

2nd REASON: IT'S NOT WORTH YOUR PRECIOUS TIME

I agree, there is a chance to win some money in a freeroll, but it's definitely not worth your time. It usually takes about 3 or more hours to finish a freeroll tournament and your chances to win are pretty low. You can often win much more money by playing in very low buy-in tournaments rather than freerolls. For a serious poker player & time is everything.

3rd REASON: IT'S LUCK, NOT SKILLS

Most of the winnings in a freeroll are based on luck and not skills. Since there is no money on the line, players don't care too much about their final position. Most of the time they go all-in with decent cards in hopes of getting lucky. Some of them get lucky, some of them don't, but that's the easiest way to collect enough points in a short time.

4th REASON: IT'S NOT REAL POKER

A lot of beginning players believe that freerolls are the best place to try poker and practice their playing skills. Actually, this might be the worst place to play and practice. Since there is no money at stake, most of the players are terrible who don't care about the game. You will only learn tactics and techniques that won't work in real poker tournaments where real money is on the line. Therefore, you can only hurt your skills by playing often in freerolls.

So, go and play in tournaments with real money, even if it's just a few dollars or even less. Only this way you can learn some real poker skills, tactics, and have a better understanding about poker.

Well, I must admit that I started in freerolls as well... It was more frustration than fun, but it was a start :) As I look at it now, I know that I would never go for freerolls again

Nice title :D :D

I think you are right most of the time. Personally, I no longer play freerolls. Maybe only if I want to try my luck :)

I know that there is a pretty good freeroll in Hollywood poker for the beginners (Red Carpet Tourney or something) but I never tried it myself.

But you realize yourself that this wasn't like any regular freeroll. First of all, it was mainly for forum members who wanted to play so we didn't see 3/5 AWAY players. Then, the total number of players was pretty low and the total prize pool was relatively high compared to the number of players.

It wasn't like a freeroll where 2000-3000 players compete for a prize pool of 50$, top 30 paid :)

And they will still be only for forum members with only a few away players and relatively low number of playres. So, yes, I think everyone will be happy :D

Yes I agree - freerolls are Evil :) if you don't have a credit card or realy don't want to deposit money, freerolls are the easiest way to start playing real money. Take 260th place in some freeroll and you will receive like 0.75$ and a chance. A chance to prove that you know how to play poker, and start winning more money. And when you have even some dollars I strongly recommend not to play freerolls. Do not repeat my mistake. Good luck...
