Fabio Capello is the hot odds-on favourite to become the new England manager after Jose Mourinho pulled out of the race on Monday night.

The Italian is now as short as 1/2 with Betfred and now looks set to meet with Football Association chiefs for talks in the next 48 hours.

Virtually all of Tuesday morning's newspapers including both tabloids and broadsheets lead on the strong possibility that Capello will indeed be offered the post and it's widely believed he is Brian Barwick's first choice.

The former Real Madrid coach expressed his interest in the position as soon as it became available, describing the post as a "beautiful challenge" and has been backed accordingly ever since.

Another contender Martin O'Neill has already been cut to 5/1 from 7/1 with bet365 this morning despite frequently ruling himself out of the running at numerous Aston Villa press conferences.

And the only other man to get a single figure quote is Marcello Lippi, who guided Italy to World Cup glory last summer.

He's available at 9/2 with Betfred but 6/1 with bet365 while Jurgen Klinsmann appears to be the only other genuine contender at 10s.

On Monday night Mourinho confirmed he had been in talks with Barwick and Sir Trevor Brooking but decided he does not want to be named Steve McClaren's successor.

And the bookies took his word by initially shunting out his price from as short as evens favourite to as big as 40/1 in places, although he's 20/1 with bet365 and 12/1 with Betfred.

"We're not surprised that Jose appears to be a doubtful runner," said William Hill's Graham Sharpe. "He was not attracting any serious betting money at all and, in a market like this, that is a real indication that there is nothing other than hype happening."

"In that sense, I had myself useful discussions with Brian Barwick and Trevor where we exchanged ideas to evaluate the entire situation about the England squad and set the goals in case of real invitation being addressed to me.

"After deep and serious thinking, I decided to exclude myself from being England manager despite it being a fantastic position for me.

"I'm sure FA will hire a great manager, one able to place the team back where it belongs."
